A VHF radio transmitter is a vital piece of safety equipment aboard any vessel from a hand held radio on a paddle board or kayak to a fixed set on a blue water long distance cruiser. Everyone going afloat, either as skipper or crew, should understand how to use a VHF radio to communicate efficiently with the Coast Guard if help is needed as well as for routine communications between other vessels, marinas and harbour authorities. Under international law a boat’s radio transmitter may only be operated by, or under the control of, someone who has an appropriate radio operators Certificate of Competency.

The Irish Short Range Certificate, (SRC), is currently the appropriate VHF radio operators certificate for most leisure and small craft users as well as a requirement for many small commercial craft. An SRC is necessary when applying for an Irish Ship Station licence, Call Sign and MMSI number and is a prerequisite for many RYA and IS certificates and examinations.

We cover the use of both fixed and hand held VHF radios with a session devoted to practical hands on radio operation, all with a real live instructor using VHF/DSC radios, not computer simulators, or boring videos and ‘zoom’ sessions. Our courses are designed to explain the correct procedures for emergency and routine VHF/DSC radio working as well as to enable you to successfully undertake the examination for the Department of Transport Radio Operators Short Range Certificate of Competency.

Each course is presented in a professional yet friendly manner using original material specifically written by Sea~Craft for the Irish SRC examination. The complete course takes only one evening and one full day, the exam being held at the end of the full day session. The course is fully supported by Sea~Craft’s dedicated course notes, clearly written and in plain English.

Sea~Craft students have maintained an outstandingly high pass rate of better than 99% over many years.
Sea~Craft is a Department of Transport recognised SRC course provider and examination centre. We run Irish SRC courses and exams throughout the year; see over for dates currently available and for a booking form.
