In the
Sail for Cancer Charity Race, Denis Hewitt’s Mills 31 Raptor took both the race victory and overall honours as the Sail for Cancer charity sailing event hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club returned to Dublin Bay on Friday evening (August 21), raising just under €5,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.
A fleet of 25 boats took part in the evening event, which combined racing with fancy dress, a quiz and a fun dinghy race as crews competed for the overall Sail for Cancer prizes.
In the main sailing race, Hewitt’s Raptor took first place, with Alice Delahanty's Lady A second and Hal Sisk’s Garavogue completing the top three.
The 2026 Edinburgh Cup proved a hugely successful regatta for Irish Dragon sailing, with two Royal Irish Yacht Club boats competing in the 49-boat fleet. Sir Ossis Of The River, sailed by Denis Bergin, Joey Bergin, Jacques Murphy and Rian Geraghty-McDonnell, finished an impressive 5th overall in the Corinthian devision, while Zinzan, sailed by Tim Carpenter, Declan Gordon and Nicola Halloran, finished 14th. Both boats produced strong results across the seven-race series in a wide variety of conditions.

RIYC DAD + DAUGHTER TEAM SHINE IN MELGES 15 IRISH NATIONALS
RIYCADET Elizabeth Haughton (Alex) and her father Gary have just returned from the Melges 15 Nationals hosted by HYC after an exhilarating weekend of competitive racing and camaraderie in light to moderate variable conditions.
Over the course of two days, the 21 strong fleet from across the country competed in seven races that tested tactical skills, boat handling, and teamwork.
Gary Haughton, a well known ‘Big Boat’ sailor was competing in Howth following a considerable hiatus from dinghy sailing. Both he and Alex quickly revelled in the M15’s responsive handling and control.
Gary explained “The forgiving design pops the M15 into the absolute sweet spot for such a wide mix of ages and abilities while still giving a great sense of speed, excitement and fast-paced exciting sailing”
“We were both delighted with our mid-fleet finish which we’d have bitten your hand off for considering we had not previously competed in a single race in the boat” said Gary
The HYC Race Committee operations were smooth and efficient, with courses set promptly and adjusted as needed to reflect changing wind patterns. The event also featured RaceSense Vakaros automatic OCS start line infraction detection. This technology is a game changer for our sport. It was embraced by all and saved at least 3 general recalls and the associated time required for resets.
“We were both grinning ear to ear on Sunday evening as we had some top class racing in a competitive but welcoming and friendly fleet so the results didn’t matter (well maybe!)” said Alex
Gary said; “Personally, there is something uniquely special about sailing the M15 with my 18 year-old daughter Elizebeth. Quality time like this is sometimes difficult to find. I would urge anyone who is on the fence, or even just mulling on the idea, to come on down and join us.”
Melges Ireland is offering big discounts as the M15 Europeans were held in Dun Laoghaire in July.
“With many M15 sailors opting for co-ownership, quality family time on the water is actually not that difficult to buy; though as Gary says it is in fact priceless” said Stephen Breen
